Ingredients
  

Dry Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour Plain flour works fine, but whole wheat gives a nice nutty flavor.
  • 1 tsp baking powder Essential for rising, don’t skip it!
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda Key for the bars to rise.
  • 1/2 tsp salt A whisper of salt enhances sweetness.
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon Essential for apple desserts.
Wet Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted Lidl brand is economical and effective.
  • 1 cup brown sugar Light brown sugar adds caramel notes.
  • 1 large egg Optional: add an extra yolk for richness.
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract Madagascar vanilla is best, supermarket is fine too.
Main Ingredients
  • 2 cups apples, peeled and chopped Granny Smith is recommended for tartness.
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans) Optional for added crunch.
  • Optional to taste icing sugar for dusting Just for presentation.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a 9x13 inch baking dish with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon.
  3. In a large bowl, mix melted butter, brown sugar, egg, and vanilla extract until well blended.
Mixing
  1. Gradually fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined—some lumps are okay.
  2. Fold in the chopped apples and nuts (if using).
Baking
  1. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and smooth out the top.
  2. Bake for about 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Serving
  1. Cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  2. Dust with icing sugar if desired before serving.

Notes

Pair these bars with a lovely cup of chai tea. If you burn the bottom, trim off the burnt edges. You can substitute brown sugar with white sugar mixed with molasses in case of shortage.
